Today, I’ll be talking about my “fuck you” ring set. In the previous post, I explained how I use tarnish resistant and hypoallergenic wire to make most of my jewelry. The reason I say most, is because I do make other jewelry, just out of 99.9% pure silver, and soon, I’ll be using 92.5% sterling silver. It’s just that some of my designs are too delicate for soft silver, so I have to use a sturdier silver, but that’s for another blog post. The “fuck you” ring set is of course offered in copper, silver, gold, and rose gold. Because of the space the lettering takes up, the smallest size I currently make is a US size 4, and because my mandrels only go up to US size 12, that’s the largest size I offer. I also make them adjustable if it’s requested in the comments section of the order.

They can be worn next to each other, with a finger or two in between, or one as a normal placement ring, and the other as a midi ring. A customer contacted me with a photo she found, and said that she wanted the “fuck” ring to be smaller (so basically a midi ring) than the “you” ring so that she could wear them both upside down, and on her middle finger. Think about it. That’s a creative way to get through your day without having to say a single word. I’d be flipping birds everywhere. It’s especially useful for mornings.

A few months ago, my “fuck you” rings started to gain more traction, and before I knew it, a large majority of orders that came in were for this set. It was odd, but I didn’t think much of it. Weeks started to go by and I was positive that I was making less of my bestsellers, and more of these cute little grumpy rings. So I decided to google, fuck you rings, and sure enough, my listing popped up in the strangest of places. It was featured on foreign and domestic blogs, and surprisingly, thisiswhyimbroke.com, with this funny description:

“Spice up your bland look with a little profane language by accenting your outfit with these “Fuck You” rings. When the pair of rings are placed side by side, whoever you point them at gets a heartfelt “fuck you” without you having to say a single word.”

Then, one of my customers sent me a message telling me that she posted it to a Facebook group that had 25,000 followers, along with a screenshot from her app where people were discussing it and expressing their interest. WOW ❤ (I would add the screen shot, but for the sake of their privacy, I won’t).

Honestly, I’m really flattered. I thank all of you. The growing popularity of my “fuck you” rings is still shocking. I’m truly grateful to everyone who has made this purchase for themselves and friends. It’s really exciting to see shared pictures of my rings all over social media. I love receiving your appreciation pictures, and reading your feedback. Customers who turn into clients always get surprise discounts for their second+ orders. I know that the shipping prices are getting out of hand, but we only have USPS to blame for that. It’s not just me, and it’s not only the Etsy marketplace sellers. USPS ups their pricing to us sellers every year, but fortunately, they’re still your most wallet friendly option. I’m always looking for better options for my customers.

In the past summers, some of my clients who live and work in NYC offer to meet up for their package. It’s usually pretty convenient since most people are out and about in the summer, but as of right now, in this NYC winter, $3.99 shipping is still better than the $5.50 round trip metro card for the MTA. I’m all about balancing comfort, convenience, saving people money, and great quality. Anyway, I didn’t mean to let shipping hijack this post, so that’s all I’ll say about it for now.

The main concerns I had when I started my shop in 2012 was customer affordability, metal composition, and the longevity of my wire jewelry. I needed to be able to offer cheaper alternatives for those who love handmade jewelry. That meant wire that didn’t contain precious metals like gold and silver were now on my radar. The problem with this, was that some people suffer from contact dermatitis, usually from wearing costume jewelry that contain nickel and copper. It’s pretty common, and if you’re unsure of what it is, it’s simply a skin allergy that results in various reactions of the skin including, rashes, blisters, and a change in skin color. Guess who’s conveniently allergic to nickel and copper? Yep. Me.

I’m pretty sure I was put on Earth to be an avid costume jewelry consumer and collector who does weekly raids of the jewelry section in “Eternally-A-Year-More-Than-Twenty” *cough-cough*. <— Sorry for the run-on. Instead, thanks to contact dermatitis, I enjoy these gorgeous inexpensive pieces of costume jewelry on others with my eyeballs and imagination. The positive of this allergy was that I was now my own lab rat. I drew up my designs, then purchased base metal wire stand-ins for copper, silver, gold, and rose gold. (Jewelry grade…not the Depot of Home grade). I manipulated my wires to fit my designs, and wore the little “masterpieces”. Fun fact, my final master piece is always the one photographed to advertise my listing. For the made-to-order pieces, I keep the master to wear and base orders of duplicates off of, and for the one-of-a-kind pieces, I sell the master.

Blister days, and rash hours later, I failed. I went up the ladder of least expensive to most expensive, some containing small percentages of precious metals, and kept trying other wires in the name of science. When my skin stopped blistering, peeling, and being green, I finally settled on the best metal wire compositions and makeups I could find. My new friends were copper, silver, brass, baked on nylon, and a clear layer of protective film. For the sake of convenience, lets call it CPF. What I found is what I currently use:

Copper wire: solid copper with clear baked on nylon, and CPF.

Silver wire: solid copper core, 99.9% pure silver plating, clear baked on nylon, and CPF.

Gold wire: brass (metal alloy of copper and zinc), yellow-gold tinted baked on nylon, and CPF.

Rose gold wire: brass (metal alloy of copper and zinc, but with a higher percentage of copper than in the gold wire), 99.9% pure silver plated, rose-gold tinted baked on nylon, and CPF.

Allergy problem solved. Humans: 1 – Allergies: 0.

The metal wires were tarnish resistant because of the clear protective film, but not tarnish proof. I noticed that sometimes, after showering with my jewelry on, washing dishes, doing laundry, etc., the clear protective film would flake off. It wasn’t noticeable, and it definitely didn’t make my skin allergy flare up, but I did notice that it tarnished faster than the pieces I would remove before making contact with everyday chemicals. This included soaps/detergents, hand sanitizer, nail polish remover, household cleaners, etc. Thats when I tackled the next problem with a little kitchen chemistry.

A teaspoon of baking soda and squeezed lemon juice from half a lemon did the trick of renewing the luster and shine of the metals. In fact, before I box up and ship every piece of jewelry that I make for my customers, I swirl them in the bottom of a mug containing this mixture to remove any oxidation the metal endured in storage. Then, I simply rinse the mixture off under running water and dry the jewelry pieces with a paper towel. It’s so easy to do at home, and I highly recommend using this method to my customers. It also helps if the jewelry that I make is kept in the jewelry box it comes in when they’re not being worn, so as to avoid any unwanted premature oxidation of the metal. It’s always great to have a preventative measure and an “after the fact” resolution just in case, and it really depends on the kind of person you are when it comes to taking care of your jewelry.

So, although other Etsy shops have a few similar items as I do in my shop, and they’re a little less expensive, it’s really up to you as the consumer to choose what the best fit for you is at that moment of purchase. This has been my most popular piece. It is truly a bestseller. In the 9.5 months that my Etsy shop FromBrooklynWLove -> [ www.Etsy.com/shop/FromBrooklynWLove ] has been open, this specific ring has received over 15,505 views, 1,450 admirers, and has made it into 16 treasury lists. I have hand-made and sold over 400 of these Turquoise Bead Knuckle Rings. Although I offer this piece in gold, copper, silver, and rose gold, the metal mire colors that my buyers frequently order them in, is gold and silver. I have sold these rings domestically through Etsy to buyers all over the United States, and internationally all over the world, including places like England, Australia, Germany, United Arab Emirates, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands, just to name a few. I even came across orders from countries I had never heard of.

~~One fun fact I learned to not freak out about when I had gotten my first UAE buyer, is that there are no zip codes in Abu Dhabi. Since the city is constantly in the motions of being built and being perfected, there are no set zip codes yet. Everything is by zone. The easiest way I was able to understand this seemingly foreign concept, was by thinking of it as how us Americans use PO Boxes. We have to go to a facility to pick up our mail that way, the same way they do, and all of a sudden, it is not so very foreign to pick up your personal mail and packages held in a mailing facility only walking distance from your home. ~~

Anyway, back to the awesome little Turquoise Bead Knuckle Ring. This piece is lightweight and very sturdy. (I use the thickest wire I possibly can that also lends a delicate look. No monstrosities here! See my last rant.) It is adjustable (the ends are neatly tucked away so that it won’t snag on clothing or skin), and hypoallergenic. (Nickel-free and also non-tarnish. It is the nickel in non-precious metals that cause unwanted skin reactions like blisters, rashes, and that weird green hue. The non-tarnish part means exactly what you think. The ring won’t tarnish. The wire that I use has a special coating on it that prevents the metal from oxidizing when it comes in contact with oxygen the way natural silver does.) It is also well made. I’m a perfectionist, so if it doesn’t look perfect, it’s not going out to my buyers. I will remake it if I have to.

I love making jewelry, especially this piece. It’s pretty convenient that it’s the most popular amongst my buyers, yet its the easiest and fastest piece for me to make. I also love wearing this piece. This specific design spurred many of my buyers to request that I create and list new rings with this same design, except with other bead colors and different finishes like matte, glossy, pearlescent, etc. Those also sell quite frequently too.
